8 Reasons Why a Personal Health Coach is Worth the Investment

Personal health coaches from weight loss center kansas city

Oftentimes when we hear the term, “personal health coach,” we write this off as an investment that is a luxury. We think to ourselves that we already know what we need to do to lose the weight, so why spend the money?

The biggest issue is that if you have already tried a method and it hasn’t worked, don’t you owe it to yourself to try something different? Second, if you know what to do and aren’t doing it, couldn’t you use the support of a coach to keep you accountable?

As we ring in the new year and begin making resolutions around our overall health and fitness, we prepare ourselves to make changes. When December comes around and you look back at what has changed, hiring a personal health coach can be one of the changes that made a true difference in your overall wellness, confidence, and energy.

Don’t let another year go by thinking, “this is going to be my year” without making the changes that will bring you closer to that goal.

What is a Health Coach?

Let’s start at the very beginning with what a health coach is. A health coach is a certified fitness professional that supports clients in achieving health goals through lifestyle and behavior modifications.

Personal health coaches are part of your team and you can think of them as personal advocates rooting for your wellness. They will listen to your overall goals, understand your current lifestyle habits, analyze individual metrics, and create a realistic plan that you can integrate into your everyday life.

You can see your coach as someone who will break through the noise of everything you have heard in the fitness and diet industry and lead you in the right direction - the direction that is a more rich and confident life.

Why Hire a Personal Health Coach?

Instead of trying to find the next best diet, or watching another YouTube workout video in your living room, it can be incredibly helpful, and less lonely, to have a coach on your side. With their years of experience and training, they have a well-rounded understanding of what to do to make a true shift in your life and overall mentality. Here are a few specific reasons why personal health coaches are worth the investment.

1. Set Realistic Goals

One of the biggest reasons that people looking to become healthy stop their journey prematurely, is because along the way they become discouraged. When starting a new diet or program, people often put pressure on themselves to see a giant shift in look or in numbers on the scale overnight.

Once an unrealistic goal is expected and not met, it can be extremely discouraging. Discouraging enough to stop the regimen and simply quit.

One of the ways that a personal health coach can curb this is through setting realistic goals. Before getting started on a program, there will be an in-depth analysis of your current goals, lifestyle, measurements, and diet/exercise history to get an in-depth understanding of your current metabolic state. Once those numbers have been assessed, a plan will be made with realistic goals and milestones created for you.

Being that the creation of these goals is custom, and not a generic, “lose 8 pounds by the end of the month,” expectation, they will be more attainable. After seeing the small wins rather quickly, it is much easier to keep that momentum up and reach your end goal - a healthier and happier lifestyle.

2. Create Customized Plans

With a health coach by your side, there is no cookie-cutter plan from a list that will be picked out and handed to you. This is one of the biggest things that sets this option apart from other options to get fit.

A lot of times, we see group fitness as a solution that is appealing to people trying to lose weight. While the idea of emotional support is attractive and can be found in other ways, the largest drawback is that most of the people in that group are on the same plan.

With different metabolisms, lifestyle habits, and mindsets, we ask ourselves, how can there be a one-size-fits-all plan? Simple, there can’t.

A personal health coach takes the time to get to know you and your lifestyle to make a plan that is couture to your needs, setting you up for optimal success.

3. They Look Beyond the Scale

Health coaches take more into account than your weight. Because they are not just personal trainers or just fitness coaches, they truly look at the body as a whole. This also includes your psyche, but we’ll be getting to that a little later.

Your final weight is not the only metric for progress. When it comes to fitness there are other things that a personal health coach will be interested in to see if progress is being made.

Some of the things your health coach will be interested in are if you have been meeting your calorie count if your measurements are decreasing if your energy is up. All of these are signs that your shifts in choices are going in the right direction.

Keep in mind that this does not mean that a smaller figure and a lower weight number will not be part of your goal, it definitely will be. Coaches understand that wanting to look good is usually the biggest reason for wanting to get healthy, however, it will not be the only way progress is measured.

4. No Gimmicks

This one ties back into the experience and education factor. A health coach is a professional individual with training on metabolism, nutrition, exercise, and overall lifestyle habits. Where there is education and science, there is no room for guessing.

Recommendations made by your coach will be based on actual data that has been studied in the industry for decades. This means that there will not be recommendations based on fads such as drinking celery juice or cutting out whole food groups entirely. Any and all aspects of your customized plan will be made based on scientific knowledge of the human body and experience working with many people.

5. Will Help You Change Your Mindset

A lot of the training that a health coach provides revolves around mindset and changing habits. Going back to old habits, whether it be due to stress, or emotions, or laziness, is what can land us back in the physical state we were in before we started our journey to get healthy.

A health coach will get to know you and your struggles and give you the tools that will help you be successful against urges to retreat to old ways. We hear it time and time again, “change your habit, change your life.” We like to think that the first half of that is, “change your mindset, change your habits.

The mind is a powerful tool that navigates us through our day-to-day life and decisions. As coaches, the priority becomes to educate you on why the science works, so that these mindset shifts can become more natural. It is much easier to do something when you understand the “why” versus the simple, “because I said so.”

With a cheerleader in your corner making sure that your mind is on track in addition to your fitness, you can be confident that the weight you shed and changes you see will be long-term.

6. Keep You Accountable

Ah, accountability. Some of us love that word and some of us hate it. The reality is that when there is accountability, more often than not, we get more done. The same applies to fitness.

When beginning a relationship with a client, health coaches will review past efforts to get healthy and one of the things asked is, “when were you most successful in your fitness journey” or, “how did you find the most success with weight loss in the past?” One of the most common answers is when there was an element of accountability. Whether it be the buddy system when going to the gym, or a Facebook group, anytime there is some form of accountability, there was typically the most success for clients. For this reason, accountability is a big part of working with your coach.

A personal health coach is someone who will be checking in with your frequently in the form of emails, texts, meetings, Facebook groups, and more. This outside accountability factor decreases the chance that a client will stop their program mid-week or stop working towards their goals. Having someone that is checking in on how you’re doing and supporting you goes a long way when it comes to meeting your goals.

7. Manage Your Resources

As professionals, a personal health coach is ready to give recommendations on materials that will serve to get you closer to your end goal. Instead of having to guess what home gym equipment is best, if you need all 3 gym memberships or simply yummy new recipe recommendations, a personal health coach will have you covered.

Your coach will remove the guessing from what you may need or could use on your journey and serve as someone on your side who has done this and can help you declutter your resources to only the ones that will make the most positive impact on your weight-loss journey.

8. Emotional Support

Adversely to other programs, your health coach will get to know YOU. Not just account number you, but the real you. This relationship becomes one where your coach cares about you and is looking out for you in a supportive way.

Personal health coaches also usually bring a community of support along with them. In the form of Facebook Groups or group Zoom meetings, there is also a community that is available for you to connect with outside of just your coach.

Having people who are on the same journey, learning the same things, and offering support are very meaningful and crucial to success. Personal coaches create a community that lifts all members up and can provide a platform where everyone can grow together.
