Home Sweet Home
I’ve just returned from a quick #momventure to Nashville with my two teenagers and some friends from Montessori school who recently moved away from Kansas City. We planned the trip very last minute - love those Southwest points and Wanna Get Away fares!
It was a great trip! We stayed at the Gaylord Opryland, which is kind of like a mini-Disneyland. Our group of 12 did an Escape Room, went swimming, made a visit to the mall next door, visited the Living With Landyn store that was going out of business, tried some local fare at The Nashville Jam (fried green tomato wrap, shrimp and grits, yum) and had some monster milkshakes! We did lots of walking (10,000+ steps a day) and had lots of laughs exploring Nashville and reminiscing about old times.
I was thinking this trip was going to be a foodie’s paradise-I hear great things about Nasvhille’s restaurant scene. But one thing none of us anticipated was the massive labor/wait staff shortage in Nashville. Eating was a MAJOR ordeal. There were two to three hour waits at most restaurants we attempted to visit, even though the restaurants themselves were half-empty. NUTS! So this meant most of our meals devolved into standing in long lines for greasy pizza, Cinnabon, Auntie Ann’s pretzels, you get the idea. Starbucks was not even a reasonable alternative (and I can almost always make the Starbucks menu work). Lots of fat, lots of carbs, not so much protein. I estimated the macros on one full day of eating, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be: ~1930 calories; 98 P, 144 Carbs, 100 grams of fat. I’m guessing that’s a little under on the carbs and fat. But I’m used to eating at least 150 grams of protein a day and a lot less fat. About 36 hours in and I was feeling terrible! Miserably full but not very much energy, bloated, digestive issues, blood sugar not right, tired. Of course, had I known that things were so chaotic I would have packed more food than the few protein bars I brought along or made a quick trip to a Nashville grocery store - but I didn’t. Life goes on.
And this brings me to the point of this entire blog post. I’m so grateful for this Calories Up lifestyle I’ve settled into that follows the exact same formula as the plans we provide our clients. Optimized nutrition with plenty of protein and appropriate/sufficient calories for my daily activities, resistance training, lots of NEAT, and cardio calibrated to my fitness goals. I woke up this morning and had my usual protein-packed breakfast (2 eggs + 1/2 cup egg whites + toast), did my weekly cardio, and got on with my life. I feel back to my old self with loads of energy and ready to conquer the week. My weight was a few pounds up this morning, but I’m guessing it will come down during the week once I get hydrated and back into my normal routine. I am not stressed at all because I have a plan, and data, and science working for me.
The vanity that comes with living this way got me on this path. But the longer I am on the path, it’s the energy and sanity of this lifestyle that keeps me plodding along and for which I’m most grateful.
